Every day is the perfect day to save food from waste. This Food Waste Action Week (March 17-23) is reminding Canadians to be more mindful of their food habits and reduce avoidable food waste.

Organized by Love Food Hate Waste, this year’s theme, “Plan for What You Buy,” emphasizes how smarter shopping and meal planning can help prevent food from ending up in the trash.

Canadians Are Ready to Act – Here’s How They Plan to Reduce Food Waste

A new Léger survey for Too Good To Go shows that 85% of Canadians intend to take at least one action to reduce food waste in 2025:

  • 51% intend to keep their fridge organized to ensure they consume what they purchase.
  • 45% intend to plan meals more carefully to avoid buying excess food—directly echoing this year’s Food Waste Action Week theme.
  • 43% intend to make better use of leftovers by incorporating them into new meals.
  • 28% intend to buy imperfect produce or surplus food from restaurants and stores—this is where the Too Good To Go marketplace app can help, by making it easy to save perfectly good food that would otherwise go to waste.
  • 20% intend to visit the grocery store more often to reduce spoilage.
  • 10% intend to improve their understanding and use of date labels—an area where more awareness is needed.
Too Good To Go’s Impact: Saving Food, One Surprise Bag at a Time

At Too Good To Go, we make it simple for Canadians to take action. Through our marketplace app, consumers are currently saving nearly 100,000 Surprise Bags of unsold food every week from local restaurants, bakeries, convenience stores, grocery stores and any other type of food businesses. These Surprise Bags help cut down on food waste while also saving consumers money—an especially important factor as 90% of Canadians expect further grocery price increases in 2025.

Additionally, our Look-Smell-Taste initiative is helping Canadians build confidence in their ability to assess food edibility, addressing a major cause of waste. Research from Second Harvest has revealed that 23% of avoidable food waste is caused by the misuse and misunderstanding of Best Before dates. By trusting their senses, consumers can waste less and save more.

BE PART OF THE SOLUTION

Reducing food waste doesn’t have to be complicated. Small changes—like planning meals, organizing your fridge, using food marketplace apps like Too Good To Go, and understanding date labels—can have a big impact.
