Earth Day is coming up this week, but at Too Good To Go we believe that every day can be Earth Day... with just one tap. In a country where two tons of food are wasted every second, generating greenhouse gases at every stage from farm to fork... we need to treat every day like Earth Day.
We are so proud of our community of Waste Warriors for doing just that, and the impact you've all made in the fight against food waste. According to Project Drawdown, reducing food waste is the most impactful action we can take against climate change.
Together we have saved over 165,000 meals+ from the trash since we launched in the Fall. Each meal saved equates to 5.5 pounds of CO2, which means that with your help our mission has been able to offset over 900,000 pounds of CO2e. That's more than 80 flights around the world! ️
Now let's take a look at some of Project Drawdown's key findings around reducing food waste as a climate solution, and more actions we can take at home every day.
- If 50-75% of food waste is reduced by 2050, avoided emissions could be equal to 10.3-18.8 gigatons of carbon dioxide.
- Reducing waste also avoids the deforestation for additional farmland, preventing 74.9-76.3 gigatons of additional emissions.
- Up to 35% of food in high-income economies is thrown out by consumers.
Together, we can make a real impact 💚
Here are our top 6 tips for fighting food waste every day:
- Plan ahead & get creative: Always make a shopping list so you buy what you need, and use what you already have to inspire new meals.
- Show some love to ugly produce: Nearly 1/3 of perfectly edible fruits and veggies are tossed because of beauty standards. Next time you're shopping, go for the odd-looking produce to keep it from going to waste.
- Understand food labels and expiration dates: Expiration dates are safety labels, while "best before" and "sell by" dates are quality recommendations from the manufacturers. Brush up on your date labeling knowledge with our blog post here.
- Store food properly: According to the NRDC, two-thirds of household waste is due to food spoilage from not being used in time. Visit our knowledge hub for tips on how to best store your food at home.
- Re-use and repurpose your food: Give a second life to your stems, stalks, leaves & peels. We love sharing tips for using these bits on our Instagram page.
- Save a meal on Too Good To Go with just one tap! Every meal you save on the app is equivalent to 5.5 pounds of CO2. Now there's an immediate impact.
