Too Good To Go launches in Cork City

TOO GOOD TO GO, THE WORLD’S LARGEST ANTI-FOOD WASTE APP, ARRIVES IN CORK

The world’s largest anti-food waste app, Too Good To Go, has announced its official launch in Cork.

Leading the food waste movement, Too Good To Go lets people buy surplus food and drink from restaurants, grocery stores, pubs, cafes and producers to stop it from going to waste.

From today, Cork locals can download the free Too Good To Go app and search for their nearby store with unsold food. They simply then purchase a ‘Surprise Bag’ at a fraction of the original retail price, collect it at an allotted time and enjoy it.

There are already a number of popular Cork businesses signed up to fight food waste with Too Good To Go, including Sonflour, Cork Coffee Roasters, Amigo’s, Izz Cafe, SOMA2, and Boru Coffee Shop.

Having first launched in Dublin in October, Too Good To Go has already amassed a community of over 100,000 app users and over 500 food businesses, who together have saved almost 50,000 bags of leftover food from going to waste. In doing so, 125,000kg of C02e emissions have been saved - the equivalent amount of C02e as that emitted by 1,161 flights from Dublin to London.

As the app’s third city launch in Ireland, a recent survey commissioned by Too Good To Go found that 76% of Cork locals have included sustainable habits in their 2022 resolutions*.

Co-founder of Too Good To Go, Jamie Crummie said:

“I’m thrilled to be launching Too Good To Go in Cork. We’ve already seen a huge appetite for fighting food waste since we arrived in Ireland in October last year and I’m excited to see how much of an impact we can have in the coming months and years. By doing something as simple as saving a Surprise Bag on their way home from work or on their way to meet friends, we’re all doing our part in tackling climate change while getting some delicious food at a great price at the same time - it’s a win-win."

On joining Too Good To Go, Lorenzo Barba - co-owner of Sonflour, a sustainably-led Italian restaurant in the heart of Cork said:

“We’re really excited to be partnering with Too Good To Go. Having worked in restaurants throughout my career, I’ve seen first-hand how much food can go to waste in the hospitality industry. That's why when opening my own restaurant it was really important to make sure we operate as sustainably as possible, for example we make all our fresh pasta to order. Using the Too Good To Go app offers an easy way for us to be less wasteful and reduce our carbon footprint in the process."

ABOUT TOO GOOD TO GO

Too Good To Go has a simple mission: to make sure all food gets eaten, not wasted.

In 2016, a group of entrepreneurs witnessed restaurant staff throwing away fresh food. The food’s only problem? It hadn’t sold in time, and no one was around to take it off the restaurant’s hands. The group pioneered a seamless solution: an app that lists businesses’ unsold food so local diners can find, buy and enjoy it.

Now, thousands of Surprise Bags are rescued from businesses such as supermarkets, restaurants, and bakeries every day. The success of the app powers Too Good To Go’s wider efforts to drive a food waste movement, working with schools, industries, and governments to build a planet-friendly food system.
