A Day In The Life of a Sales Representative

Hey there! My name is Janae and I’m a B2B Sales Representative at Too Good To Go in NYC.

I’m originally from the suburbs of Houston, TX but have lived in the city for almost 4 years. Along with working at TGTG, I’m pursuing my Masters part-time at NYU in Food Studies. So if you’re wondering if I think about food 24/7 - the answer is yes. Do I enjoy that? It is quite literally my dream come true.

In my role, I spend most of my days out in the field pitching the TGTG mission and platform to potential partners at restaurants, cafes, and shops. Every time a new place pops up in the app, it’s because my team has been putting in work to spread the message! I’ve been with the company since we launched in the US almost 4 months ago and have loved every moment.

Today, I’m excited to show you a day in my life! Come along to learn what being a Too Good To Go Sales Representative is all about.

7:20 AM: I woke up and started my day with a Cardio & Leg HIIT workout on the Nike Training app before logging online. Under no circumstances do I skip breakfast! I’m a BIG food planner, for no reason other than it makes me very happy. While I eat breakfast I’m already thinking about what I’ll eat for lunch and dinner today… and probably the next few days, too.

Today's breakfast

9:00 AM: Work mornings start off with the lovely faces of the NYC and Boston sales team on a virtual call. On today’s call we celebrated reaching a new milestone of registered users on our platform, which feels AMAZING!! This called for everyone to unmute and yell as loud we could in excitement. It provided the ultimate boost of energy and also a great statistic to talk about in the field today.

9:30 AM: Making your own day-to-day schedule is a nice little perk of sales. Today I’m heading straight into the field to pitch the app, but some mornings I focus on phone sales and emailing. My region includes Midtown and Hell’s Kitchen. I’ve gotten to know the flow of busy and slow times of the day.

FYI, Times Square is great early in the morning when it’s quiet and just you under all the lights.

Pitching to stores about the app is all about having mission-driven conversations and making friends in the industry. I never get tired of seeing the reaction of store owners when I tell them how it works and that they can start saving food today! One of the things I enjoy the most about this job is being a voice to our mission. Every day I’m working to empower and inspire everyone from business owners, to staff members, to random people on the street to fight food waste. I take ownership in spreading that message and I’m proud to do so.

12:00 PM: Since restaurants get busy around lunch time, I came home and got to enjoy that lunch that I’ve been thinking about since 7:20 am. I spent half of that time checking my school email and reviewing my assignments that are due that week. I spent the other half catching up on Salesforce admin and checking our Slack channel to cheer on my coworkers as they make sales!

One of my favorite TGTG values is WE FIGHT TOGETHER. I never feel alone in this job, and my team always has my back. All throughout the day we send messages of encouragement, offer advice, help out and make each other laugh with the expert-level GIFs. We are all fighting for one mission and the road to get there is a lot easier together. The Slack channel is a daily reminder of how strong this value is.

1:30 PM: Back to the streets! I’m on my way to make it happen this afternoon and get some partners onboarded in the app and trained! Check out this selfie with one of my recent signups Bird & Branch!

I like to keep it fun while I’m walking around the streets of Manhattan, so there is typically a lot of singing and dancing involved in my day. A little bit of the Hamilton soundtrack, mixed with Nao, Frank Ocean and James Blake. I like to think of my unofficial role at TGTG as Director of Song and Dance.

5:30 PM: Another chance to catch up with the sales team on our end of day meeting! On today’s call we shared lessons learned from the field and how store owners reacted when we told them about the latest user milestone. We compared conversations and traded good stories to use when pitching tomorrow.

6:00 PM: Tonight I switch into (virtual) school mode right after work, reviewing my notes for my Food & Culture and Contemporary Issues In Food classes. Whenever I can, I’ll be a waste warrior myself and do a pickup on the app, or cook the dinner that, again, I’ve been thinking about since 7:20 am.

Pickup from Lily’s Vegan Pantry - I love getting to try new things that I wouldn’t typically order!

At the end of today, I’m reflecting on how thankful I am for this opportunity. Every day I’m leading a movement that helps the environment and the people in it. Walking around the city will never feel the same because every street has so much more meaning now than it did before. The work can be challenging but it is always rewarding because every day I watch our community grow. And as it grows, our TGTG internal family has to grow with it. I can’t wait for more waste warriors to join our movement and be a part of this amazing and very special experience!
