“To achieve 2030 goals, cities, and their mayors, must address food waste”“To achieve 2030 goals, cities, and their mayors, must address food waste”
29 September 2020 - Co-founder of Too Good To Go, the global food waste fighting app, has today called on the UK’s mayors to build food waste into their ongoing green recovery strategies.
On today, the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, Jamie Crummie, says:
“There have been some brilliant examples of brands taking a stand against food waste recently, however, at Too Good To go we’re keen to ensure that talk leads to action. Individual campaigns and initiatives can only go so far.
“What we need to see next is local policy leaders acting on the information reporting and measurement at brand and retailer level provides. Whilst government support is important, we see local municipality action as the key to wide-scale change. To achieve 2030 climate goals, cities, and their mayors, must address food waste.
“Cities account for 75% of global carbon emissions, despite covering just 2% of the Earth - it therefore makes complete sense that this is where change should be driven. Municipalities have the infrastructure, relationships and local knowledge to translate food waste from something abstract into something tangible.
“To stand any chance of hitting the 2030 goals, we need cities to start playing a much larger role in the fight against food waste. Unless this happens, the optimistic goal set out in SDG 12.3 to halve food waste by 2030 is not going to be met. Five years have slipped by since this goal was set, let’s not let the next 10 do the same.”

ABOUT TOO GOOD TO GO
Too Good To Go has a simple mission: to make sure all food gets eaten, not wasted.
In 2016, a group of entrepreneurs witnessed restaurant staff throwing away fresh food. The food’s only problem? It hadn’t sold in time, and no one was around to take it off the restaurant’s hands. The group pioneered a seamless solution: an app that lists businesses’ unsold food so local diners can find, buy and enjoy it.
Now, thousands of Magic Bags are rescued from businesses such as supermarkets, restaurants, and bakeries every day. The success of the app powers Too Good To Go’s wider efforts to drive a food waste movement, working with schools, industries and governments to build a planet-friendly food system.
Too Good To Go by numbers:
14 countries
50 million meals saved globally
