This 15-minute kitchen skill can help reduce Christmas turkey wasteThis 15-minute kitchen skill can help reduce Christmas turkey waste
2 December 2020 - Too Good To Go, the food app with a conscience, has partnered with award-winning online butcher, Farmison & Co, to help Brits reduce turkey wastage this Christmas.
With smaller Christmas Day gatherings on the cards, sales of small turkeys and turkey crowns are soaring. A new survey commissioned by Too Good To Go has found that 30% of Brits are planning to buy a smaller turkey than normal this year. Turkey Crown is the most popular size with two thirds of Brits choosing it for their Christmas dinner meals.
Only 17% of adults are planning on buying large birds. This could lead to a glut of large turkeys going to waste.
However, a smaller celebration doesn’t have to mean large or extra large turkeys are left on the shelf.
Nearly three in five Brits (58%) do not know how to butcher a turkey, yet one in six (15%) would like to know - that’s 8 million UK adults who would like to learn the skill. This, coupled with the fact that only half of adults (51%) always use up their Christmas dinner leftovers, means that learning a new skill could reduce food waste in and out of the home this year.
To help, Too Good To Go has partnered with online butcher Farmison & Co to create a handy 15-minute turkey butchery guide so that UK consumers can choose a large turkey and still enjoy a meal for a smaller gathering on Christmas Day - with plenty of turkey leftover for cooking in the New Year.
Jamie Crummie, co-founder of Too Good To Go, said: “With smaller gatherings expected this Christmas, it’s perhaps unsurprising that turkey crowns are the most popular size amongst the half of Brits planning to eat turkey this year. But, there is absolutely no reason why larger turkeys should be wasted this festive season. Learning how to butcher and portion up a larger bird at home can still give you the smaller Crown portion for roasting on Christmas Day, whilst also providing plenty of meat to freeze and enjoy later in 2021. Turkey is not just for Christmas after all.”
Andrew Carrington, Master Butcher at Farmison & Co, said: “Butchering a raw bird is much more forgiving than breaking down a cooked one. If you’ve ever butchered any type of poultry, or even broken down a cooked bird, then butchering a turkey might just be a breeze. Breasts, wings, legs - turkey’s share the same parts, and they can be broken down in the same way.”
Too Good To Go lets people buy surplus food and drink from pubs, restaurants, retailers and producers to stop it from going to waste. Consumers simply download the free Too Good To Go app and search for nearby businesses with unsold produce. They then purchase a ‘Magic Bag’, collect it at an allotted time and enjoy it.

ABOUT TOO GOOD TO GO
Too Good To Go has a simple mission: to make sure all food gets eaten, not wasted.
In 2016, a group of entrepreneurs witnessed restaurant staff throwing away fresh food. The food’s only problem? It hadn’t sold in time, and no one was around to take it off the restaurant’s hands. The group pioneered a seamless solution: an app that lists businesses’ unsold food so local diners can find, buy and enjoy it.
Now, thousands of Magic Bags are rescued from businesses such as supermarkets, restaurants, and bakeries every day. The success of the app powers Too Good To Go’s wider efforts to drive a food waste movement, working with schools, industries and governments to build a planet-friendly food system.
